A large transformer with a 15 kv secondary has the secondary output connected to a set of vertical heavy copper "horns". At the bottom the gap is sufficiently small that a spark can jump and start an arc. The ionization then will allow the spark to jump a much larger gap as the heat convects the spark up the "horn".
